What happens when you reach us
The first call is short and it is mostly us asking questions. Where does the dryer sit, and is it gas or electric. How long does a normal load take now, and how long did it take last year. Is the laundry in a basement, on the main floor, or upstairs. Can you see the hood from outside, and does the flap move when a load runs. Have you ever had the duct cleaned, and if so, roughly when. Six or seven answers is usually all it takes for us to picture the run and tell you whether this is a straight cleaning, a blockage, or something that needs repair work. If you are calling about a building with several machines, we will ask how many, where they vent, and whether the stack is shared. Nothing about that call is a sales pitch. It is us deciding what to bring on the truck.
A few things help if you have them handy. The brand and rough age of the dryer, because older machines push less air and are less forgiving of a long run. Any recent work on the house, especially siding, roofing, or a finished basement, since all three can bury or crush a vent. Whether the hood outside has a screen or a cage on it. If you know your laundry room used to be somewhere else in the house, that is worth mentioning, because a moved laundry room often means an abandoned duct still sitting in a wall. None of this is required. Tell us what you know and we will find the rest. If you can send a photo of the back of the dryer and the hood outside, that is often better than any description, and it lets us give you a tighter time estimate before we ever roll up.
After the call, we set a window and we hold it. You get a heads up by phone when the truck is on the way, usually twenty or thirty minutes out. The work itself takes one visit in most homes. We walk the run with you first, do the cleaning, then run a cycle and check the air at the hood while you watch. Before we leave you get a plain summary of what came out, what shape the duct is in, whether the hose behind the machine should be swapped, and roughly when you should think about the next visit. If we find something that needs parts or a longer stretch of time, we tell you right then and book the return rather than starting a job we cannot finish that day. Paperwork is light. A short written record of what we did, and that is it.
Access is the thing that trips up scheduling, so let us sort it early. We need to get to the back of the dryer, which means clearing whatever has piled up beside the machine. We also need to reach the hood outside, so if it sits behind a locked gate, a fence, a hedge, or a deck, mention that when you book. Winter adds a step here in Elgin, because a hood buried in a snow drift or blocked by an ice dam takes extra work to reach. If the vent terminates on a roof, tell us the roof pitch and the height if you know them. For condos and rentals, we just need one clear point of contact who can let us in and approve the work. Dogs are fine, we like dogs, but we do have to open a door to the yard at some point.
We will be straight with you about what happens after we go. A clean duct does not stay clean forever, and nobody should tell you otherwise. Lint starts building again with the first load. If your cycle times start creeping back up in six months instead of eighteen, something structural is wrong, and we would rather come look at it than have you quietly live with it. One more thing on reaching us. Mornings are the easiest time to get us on the phone, since afternoons we are usually in somebody's basement with a vacuum running. If we miss you, leave a message with your street and the town, and we will call back the same day.
